Which eye colour is most sensitive to sunlight? What doctors say

Parents often ask if blue or green eyes are more sensitive than brown ones. The short answer is that lighter-colored eyes may experience more discomfort from bright light because they have less pigment in the iris. However, this does not mean that dark-colored eyes do not need protection.

What role does melanin play?

Melanin contributes to the color of the iris. A smaller amount of pigment can allow greater light diffusion into the eye and may be associated with more photosensitivity or discomfort. Individual experience varies, and eye color is not a diagnosis.

Light sensitivity and UV risk are not the same

A child with blue eyes may complain more about glare, but all eyes are exposed to UV radiation. For every child, we choose sunglasses with reliable UV protection, proper coverage, and a good fit, along with a hat when needed.

When is medical advice needed?

Severe or sudden photosensitivity, pain, redness, tearing, blurred vision, or light avoidance should not simply be attributed to eye color. They require evaluation by a doctor.

Key takeaways

  • Light-colored eyes may be more bothered by bright light.
  • All children need UV protection.
  • A very dark lens tint does not guarantee UV protection.
  • Persistent photosensitivity needs to be checked.
